If social media platforms were people, who would you swipe right on?

From Instagram’s obsession with aesthetics to LinkedIn’s desperation to tell you about their latest accreditation, each social media platform brings something completely different to the table.

To save your business getting ghosted – it’s important to take the time to consider how you interact with each of these channels.

What will you share with them? How are you sharing that content? Will they even care?

Let’s work it out with a bit of role-play:

TikTok

Ah, the chaotic Gen Z wildcard. TikTok most likely takes you on an activity-based date (with a lot of cocktails).

They burst in with, “OMG, have you seen this trend? Let’s make a dance video right now!” They’re fun, fast-paced, and totally unpredictable.

With a short attention span – they want to jump on the trends as quickly as possible (first few days) before it becomes old news.

How to impress them:

Share video content with them but keep it short & snappy (30 seconds max), embrace trends and keep replies light-hearted.

Instagram

The effortlessly cool influencer that loves aesthetically pleasing content, fun reels and seeing what others are up to.

Expect them to say “let’s get a selfie… but only from my good side” at some point during the date.

How to impress them:

Show them your stunning reels and photo carousels that showcase your personality (or your business). Make sure to use engaging captions that spark conversation and collaborate with other accounts for growth.

Facebook

Your over-friendly neighbour that loves a good chat and often encourages you to join their community groups.

Every now and then they might pull out their phone and say, “Hey, look at this horrifyingly embarrassing memory of you from five years ago!”

How to impress them:

Ask questions, join and engage with a range of groups related to your business, and talk to them like you’re catching up with an old friend.

X

It’s the toxic one that your friends warned you about. The know-it-all, opinionated talker who is ready for a full-blown debate.

Before you’ve even sat down, they kick off with, “So, here’s my hot take on…” they love to debate, real-time convos, and interrupting with a witty remark.

How to impress them:

Jump onto trending topics and use them to get your point across (hashtags related to awareness dates, controversial topics etc that you can link back to your business). Reply with humour and keep it short and sharp.

LinkedIn

The career-driven networker. Leans in and says, “Tell me about your biggest professional achievement.” Polished, insightful, and a bit nosey.

Also, try not to get lost as they tell you’re their whole life story  -  they will get to the point at the end.

How to impress them:

Share unique insights, engage with thoughtful comments, and keep the tone professional, yet personal.
